Boards are accountable for the long-term health of the organisation. Your reporting should give them a concise, credible view of how the workforce is contributing to that, and where the risks are.
Choose a small, balanced set
Aim for a dashboard that can be read in a couple of minutes. Balance cost, capability, and risk so no single dimension dominates the story.
- Workforce cost: total cost of workforce against plan
- Productivity: revenue or output per employee over time
- Retention: voluntary turnover, especially in critical roles
- Capability: proportion of roles with successors ready
- Engagement: a validated index, tracked consistently
- Risk: compliance, safety, and key-person exposure
Context beats a single number
A turnover figure alone means little. Show the trend, the target, the comparison to sector or internal benchmarks, and the expected business impact. Boards take action on interpretation, not raw data.
Consistency builds credibility
Use the same definitions every cycle so the board can track movement confidently. When a definition must change, flag it explicitly and restate prior periods where possible.
